Detroit’s Motown Museum has announced a US$1m (€885,000, £740,000) grant from the Bank of America to further innovative programming and drive forward its ongoing expansion campaign.

According to the Michigan-based museum, the grant will “help strengthen the surrounding neighbourhood and deliver life-changing programming”, with the funding increasing the total amount raised so far towards the expansion to US$38m (€33.6m, £28.1m).

The US$55m (€48.6m, £40.7m) campaign will eventually see the museum transformed into a 50,000sq ft (4,645sq m) world-class entertainment and education tourist destination featuring dynamic, interactive exhibits, a performance theatre, recording studios, an expanded retail experience and meeting spaces created by renowned architects and exhibit designers.

When completed, the museum says that the new complex will have a transformative impact on the surrounding Detroit neighbourhoods, providing employment, sustainability and community pride by serving as an important catalyst for new investment and tourism in the historic area.

"We’re incredibly grateful to Bank of America and can't thank them enough for their partnership, which is impactful as we prepare for our expansion and tell the stories of the incredible Motown legacy on a larger scale," said Motown Museum chairwoman and CEO Robin Terry.

"Their commitment to supporting culture and taking meaningful action to build thriving communities is admirable and reflective in this generous gift."
