The Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) in Exeter, UK, has announced a new programme for local people aged over 50 facing anxiety and loneliness.
Dubbed ‘Museum Meet Up’, the 14-month project seeks to improve wellbeing and independence through supported opportunities to engage with cultural activities.
Funded via the National Lottery Community Fund, the sessions were created after the museum said that while people reported a willingness to engage more with cultural opportunities, many “lack the confidence to do so without support and encouragement”.
“A little bit of learning, inspiration or beauty goes a long way to nourish our brains and remind us who we really are today,” said Ruth Gidley, RAMM Engagement Officer.
“When people connect with objects – thinking about the places and people behind them – it often creates a feeling of being grounded on the planet and in the community.”
Participants will be recruited by dedicated mentors via Wellbeing Exeter, Age UK, and GP referrals, with the scheme aiming to reach 250 participants across 12 sessions. Mentors and participants in pilot projects have already shaped the sessions, and their feedback will continue to ensure the project meets their needs.
RAMM is currently seeking a freelance coordinator to deliver the Museum Meet Up project. To see this role and more, check out Planet Attractions Jobs here
