Universal Studios has officially registered a trademark application in the UK, signaling the next step in its intentions to expand into the European market.
The trademark, submitted to the UK’s Intellectual Property Office, covers a wide range of services, including amusement parks, theme parks, waterparks, hotels, restaurants, bars, and cafes.
The move follows Universal Destinations and Experiences' 2023 acquisition of a 476-acre site in Kempston Hardwick, near Bedford, which has sparked speculation about the potential development of a major resort and amusement park. While Universal has yet to confirm the full details of the project, the company has said that it routinely files trademarks globally as part of its ongoing business strategy.
The trademark application also includes entertainment services such as live performances, appearances by costumed characters, and guided tours of motion picture and television production facilities, complete with exhibitions and demonstrations.
“We continue to evaluate the potential project and are engaged in productive discussions with the UK government,” said Universal. The company’s plans are still under consideration, and negotiations are ongoing.
Universal has been significantly expanding its attractions operations in recent times, with the launch of the multi-billion dollar Universal Beijing in 2021, the ongoing development of Epic Universe in Orlando, the development of Universal Kids Resort in Texas and Horror Unleashed in Las Vegas.
When the news first broke of a potential UK project, Universal said it would be “many months” before a decision would be made as to whether or not to proceed with its UK project, which is still in the very early stages.
As the discussions evolve, all eyes remain on Universal’s next steps in the UK, which could bring exciting new attractions to the region.
