Record-breaking Fønix debuts at Fårup Sommerland
The hotly-anticipated Fønix from Vekoma has opened to the public at Fårup Sommerland with the new rollercoaster representing the park’s largest investment ever

Denmark has welcomed a brand new attraction at Fårup Sommerland with the debut of the country’s largest and most anticipated rollercoaster - the Vekoma-designed Fønix.
Standing at 40m (131ft) tall, the ride is the tallest rollercoaster in Denmark as well as the fastest with a top speed of 95kmph (59mph). The ride also holds the distinction of being the longest looped rollercoaster in the country with a 905m (2,970ft) track length.
Fønix also offers a first for rollercoasters, with the ride becoming the first in the world to include a stall loop during which the rider will be exposed to the effect of a negative G-force - experiencing weightlessness while hanging upside down. The ride also includes 14 moments of airtime - the most for any rollercoaster in the Scandinavian region.
“Last year, on the day we could disclose the news about Fønix, I called this a historic day,” said Fårup Sommerland’s CEO, Niels Jørgen Jensen.
“Indeed, with the official opening, I can truly say that I have even more butterflies in my stomach. Here in Fårup Sommerland, we take great pride in presenting a roller coaster that is without comparison the biggest in Denmark – a fact that will come to leave a significant imprint on both the Danish and the international amusement landscape.”
The ride, which opened to the public on April 9, was developed by Vekoma at a cost of €13m (US$14.1m, £10.8m) and, according to Fårup Sommerland, is “by far the largest amusement investment” in the park’s 47-year history. The previous largest investment came in 2013, with the addition of Orkanen - a suspended family coaster also by Vekoma, which was developed at a cost of €5.9m (US$6.4m, £4.9m).
“Owing to this historic investment, we at Fårup Sommerland are now looking into a tremendously exciting season,” said Jensen. “We hope and trust that, by way of such a substantial addition, we will be able to attract both Danish and international guests to the benefit of Fårup Sommerland as well as the rest of the Danish tourist industry in general.”
