A 4D dome experience at the National Center of Meteorology has opened its doors to the public as part of an engagement strategy that helps audiences understand weather data and meteorological research

Dubai’s National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has opened the doors to a brand new 4D dome, with a show taking visitors on an immersive journey through the world of meteorology and geophysics sciences.
Located inside the NCM’s research and public broadcast facility in Abu Dhabi, the Science Dome has been created to host international weather experts, who will offer ‘informal education’ through 4D immersive experiences.
Spanning 12m (39.3ft), the dome has capacity for up to 60 people and features state-of-the-art technologies, special effects, a 6K projection system and custom media.
According to NCM, the dome is a first of its kind installation, with the technology able to visualise real-time and simulated weather data.
Immersive solution experts Visuals Attraction are behind the installation, which features a Falak theatre, which comprises the 6K fulldome display with laser-illuminated projection technology. Driving the display system are two banks of media servers, which handle the system’s real-time atmospheric weather modelling and weather simulations.
To enhance immersion, the theatre also features a number of automated effects, including low-level fog machines, fans, heaters, lightning-simulators, a ‘butt kicker’ and low frequency seating effects.
“Since the very beginning, the NCM team has had a truly clear vision for the new Science Dome experience,” said Wisam Al Mufti, managing director at Visuals Attraction. “This was to use technology and entertainment to bring such a specialist topic to life, putting Abu Dhabi at the forefront of immersive theater innovation and science engagement.”
As an attraction, the theatre will be used for schools, colleges, and public screenings of a new immersive film on the Cloud Seeding and Rain Enhancement Program from NCM. For STEM purposes, it will host international groups of experts from the meteorological sector to review weather pattern simulations.
“This scientific dome is considered a hugely important addition to the National Center of Meteorology,” said Omar Al Yazeedi, director of research, development and training at NCM. “We thank everyone who contributed to and assisted in completion of the project - especially under such challenging conditions caused by COVID-19. We also extend our appreciation to Visuals Attraction for their patience and dedication to the project.”
