Nassau Cruise Port to build US$35m waterpark

The redeveloped Nassau Cruise Port is looking for family-friendly options to add to its offering, with plans announced to develop a US$35m waterpark as part of the tourist destination

The redeveloped Nassau Cruise Port officially opened in May last year

The Nassau Cruise Port in the Bahamas has announced plans to build a US$35m (€32m, £27.1m) waterpark at the facility, following its launch last year.

Nassau Cruise Port, which is the world’s fifth-largest passenger port, was redeveloped in two phases at a cost of US$300m (€271m, £240m). With improvements to enable the port to accommodate larger vessels, new attractions were developed, including a museum showcasing Bahamian cultural heritage, a 3,500-seat amphitheatre, event and entertainment spaces, a living coral exhibit and several dining, retail and entertainment venues.

The port’s latest offering will take the form of a major waterpark, with the attraction to be located behind the port’s new amphitheatre.

According to local media, the approval process for the waterpark is “well underway”, with project completion thought to be towards the end of 2025.

In addition to the waterpark, the location will also gain new F&B outlets, with a site already cleared for the development. The whole development area is being built with being family-friendly in mind.

“A lot of the experiences these visitors can participate in are adult-oriented,” said Mike Maura, Nassau Cruise Port’s chief executive, speaking to The Tribune. “Through this investment, which is a pool experience, we intend to focus on families. You take the Disney cruise ships, where the vast majority of folks are families travelling with children. We want them to have experiences that everyone can participate in and enjoy.”

The cruise industry is the Bahamas’ biggest source of revenue, with visitation in 2023 rising nearly 50% to 7,934,858 visitors year-on-year. The port represents one of the country’s most significant tourist arrival points. Around 30,000 people a day will visit the port via cruise ships.
