With the rest of the world still waiting for a confirmed date on the resumption of travel to the US, IAAPA has taken steps to ensure its overseas members will be able to attend the biggest show of the year when it opens in Orlando next month.
Set to take place November 15-19, IAAPA Expo will mark IAAPA’s in-person return to the US following a very successful show in Barcelona, Spain, for IAAPA Expo Europe.
For European and other overseas visitors to attend, however, the rules are currently unclear.
The US has said it plans to reopen in “early November”, but a firm date has not been publicly announced. As a result, IAAPA is taking steps to ensure its overseas members will still be able to attend the US Expo should they wish to, using a National Interest Exemption (NIE) to allow travel to the show.
“We have a web page that gives you everything, including an invitation letter that explains what you need to put on your application,” IAAPA’s president and CEO, Hal McEvoy, told Planet Attractions.
“Each individual needs to put in an application and needs to go to their embassy. We’ve given you all the insides of what to do, and then you will tell us that you've applied to that embassy. We’re going to take that to the federal government, to the State Department and the Customs Department and share that information and have them help guide the embassy, into giving us an exemption for our members to come here and do business.”
The hope is that US President Joe Biden will soon announce an official date for travel resumption. The national interest exemption is what IAAPA has described as a “back-up” to ensure hassle-free travel and planning for the event.
“IAAPA is actively providing support to international members planning to participate in IAAPA Expo,” said an IAAPA statement. “Currently, we’re working with the appropriate federal departments and agencies to assist with this process. We remain in constant conversation with partners in Washington DC, destination marketing agencies and other trade associations.”
