The highly-anticipated Eden Project Dundee has received planning permission from councillors, meaning the £130m (US$165.3m, €153.5m) project can now go ahead.

A major visitor attraction for Dundee and Scotland, the new Eden Project will be based at a former gasworks site in the city. It will feature three venues, one of which will be housed inside a giant former gas holder.

Focused on nature, the attraction will combine exhibits, performance, learning, play, immersive experiences, horticulture, live music, and art. Visitors will also be able to enjoy F&B options and explore retail offerings.

Called the Lush Bunker, the gas holder will also feature an exhibition space called ‘The Seam’, with the transformation hoped to become a beacon for regeneration and green tourism. Meanwhile the Valve will be a single storey entrance exhibition building with a café and seating areas, while the third, currently unnamed venue, will include gallery spaces, installations, exhibits, and artwork.

The plans also call for a live events space dubbed ‘Gathering Meadows’, which can hold up to 6,000 people.

“This is a project for Dundee, by Dundee and we are incredibly proud of the work we have undertaken together to get the project to this stage,” said Blair Parkin, Eden Project’s chief experience development officer.

“We will allow ourselves a moment of celebration but we are well aware there is still lots to do to make Eden Project Dundee a reality.

“We will now concentrate on working with all our partners, progressing the design, securing investment and continuing to deliver our community programmes in the city.”

The Dundee site will aim to replicate the success of the original Eden Project in Cornwall, with the site attracting around a million visitors a year to see what is presented as the world’s largest indoor rainforest with its giant tropical biomes.

Eden Project Dundee is one of a number of ‘Edens’ currently in development.

According to the Eden Project, new Edens “are our global response to the planetary emergency”, with the national and international projects being developed with teams from the different areas, responding to local themes and needs.

In addition to Dundee, active projects include Edens in Morecambe in the UK and further afield in Qingdao, China, and on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica.

Projects in development also include Eden Project Anglesea in Australia, and Eden Project Foyle in Northern Ireland.
