An immersive cultural experience in China has been brought to life with the help of Christie technology.

The theatrical performance, named “Ballad of Chu”, blends Chinese history with technology, with the experience in Wuhan, Hubei province, representing the first indoor immersive experience themed around Jingchu culture.

Utilising 52 Christie 1DLP laser projectors, the large-scale production has set a high bar for the integration of projection technology into heritage-based attractions.

Featuring multiple performance spaces, the 14,000sq m (150,695sq ft) Mulan Everbright Town covers three storeys. The third-floor theatre, which is equipped with 360-degree rotating seats, employs 36 Christie laser projectors in the creation of its four-sided immersive stage. Meanwhile, the “Zhaojun Goes to the Frontier” performance on the second floor uses six Captiva DWU500S projectors with customised electric gauze screens to achieve a dreamlike, soft-focus effect. Finally, on the first floor, the Battle of Red Cliffs installation immerses guests in ancient warfare through dynamic wall and floor projections powered by three Inspire Series DWU860-iS projectors. “Mulan Everbright Town has rapidly become a phenomenal night tourism landmark since its opening earlier this year,” said Ke Zhou, regional manager of Hubei district, Jianye Display, which played a pivotal role in projection design, installation, and systems integration.

“Christie’s 1DLP laser projectors were chosen for their high performance, colour accuracy, and reliability, which are essential for delivering high-impact visuals in immersive environments. This project blends tradition with cutting-edge technology, offering visitors an unforgettable cultural experience.”

The Ballad of Chu has received widespread acclaim since its launch, praised for delivering an immersive, multi-sensory journey through history that both educates and entertains. Its success, says its supporters, demonstrates the role that advanced technology can play in reimagining cultural narratives for modern audiences.

“Christie’s laser projectors bring an unparalleled level of realism and depth to immersive environments in the ‘Ballad of Chu’ theatrical performance,” said April Qin, Christie’s senior sales director for China.

“Their ability to deliver rich colours, sharp details, and seamless integration across large-scale installations makes them ideal for cultural tourism projects. We are proud to support Jianye Display in bringing this extraordinary production to life and setting new standards for experiential storytelling.”
