New research has found that the majority of the UK public is concerned that funding cuts will lead to the closure of heritage sites and cultural attractions.
A survey of 2,000 adults, carried out by Prospect union, found that 60% of respondents were concerned about the possibility, with many keen to make visits to heritage sites part of their holiday plans, while three out of four respondents said that they felt it was important to learn about the UK’s culture and heritage through museums and other heritage attractions.
An additional 60% expressed concerns that local heritage and cultural attractions could be closed or access reduced due to public sending cuts.
“Despite the economic problems the country faces, it is clear that the public believe that the heritage sector should be prioritised and protected,” said Sue Ferns, deputy general secretary of Prospect.
