Saudi Arabia announces plans for royal nature reserve

Saudi Arabia has announced plans to create a giant new nature reserve in the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia has announced plans to create a giant new nature reserve in the kingdom.

Called the Imam Faisal bin Turki Royal Reserve, the site will span the regions of Asir, Jazan and Makkah and will extend to Saudi Arabia’s territorial waters in the Red Sea.

The reserve, which will cover more than 30,000sq km (11,500sq mi), will be the eighth in Saudi Arabia and is the result of the country’s commitment to preserving environmental and biological diversity, achieving sustainable ecosystems, improving plant productivity, and protecting endangered species.

“These reserves are important contributors to national development, providing solutions to numerous environmental challenges experienced worldwide,” said Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince, Prime Minister and chairman of the Council of Royal Reserves.

“They help achieve environmental balance, preserve natural sites and the wealth of the Kingdom’s lands, support scientific research in various fields, strengthen the tourism and entertainment sectors, protect and sustain natural resources, and achieve environmental balance.”
