The island of Mindanao in the Philippines has its first planetarium.
Located in El Salvador city, El Salvador planetarium cost P35m (US$600,000) to develop and has been five years in the making since the project’s groundbreaking.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is operating the facility, which will host lectures and shows related to STEM education.
Among the planetarium’s features are an astronomical observatory, a dome theatre, a gallery hall and a conference room.
“This planetarium is more than just a building,” said Anthony Joseph Lucero, Mindanao PAGASA Regional Services Division Weather Services chief. “It is a gateway to the cosmos, a place where science, education, and imagination come together to reveal the mysteries of our universe. We will explore the vast span of space, from our very own solar system to distant galaxies and beyond.”
Following the launch, officials are working to inaugurate a similar planetarium project in Cebu tentatively later this year.
