On top of the loss of human life and the destruction of thousands of homes in the territory, a recent survey by Heritage for Peace has detailed damage done to more than 100 cultural heritage landmarks in Gaza since the start of the current conflict.
Palestine is a hub for ancient and globally significant cultural heritage, having been ruled by the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Byzantines, among others.
Among the cultural casualties are the Great Omari Mosque; the world’s third-oldest church - the Church of Saint Porphyrius; a 2,000-year-old Roman cemetery only excavated last year; and the Rafah Museum - a space hit early on by airstrikes at the start of the conflict.
Israel has accused Hamas of operating in civilian areas, including hospitals and mosques. Unesco has said that it is “deeply concerned” about the adverse impact of the ongoing fighting on cultural heritage in Palestine and Israel.
