The Middle East is the first global region to exceed pre-pandemic visitor numbers, with international arrivals to the region during the first quarter of 2023 15% higher than the same period in 2019.

The new data from the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), paints a promising picture for the Middle East, which is largely investing in major attractions and tourist destinations in an attempt to reduce its financial dependency on oil.

“Tourism has shown its resilience in the face of crisis and now, recovery is well underway - with all the challenges and opportunities this brings,” said UNWTO secretary-general Zurab Pololikashvili.

“For the Middle East, tourism represents an unrivalled driver of employment and opportunity, as well as economic diversification and resilience.”
