Another cultural addition to the Manchester scene in 2023 will be the re-opening of the Manchester Museum, which closed in August 2021 to undergo a £15m (US$18.2m, €17m) renovation.

Another cultural addition to the Manchester scene in 2023 will be the re-opening of the Manchester Museum, which closed in August 2021 to undergo a £15m (US$18.2m, €17m) renovation.
First opened in 1890, the museum hosts a vast collection of more than 4.5 million objects from across the globe. Scheduled to reopen on February 18 following closure, works included a two-storey extension, as well as the addition of several new galleries, including a new Exhibition Hall, the South Asia Gallery – in partnership with the British Museum, and the Lee Kai Hung Chinese Culture Gallery.
The new museum will also include a new retail space and café and new inclusive facilities including a ramped entrance, quiet room, therapy space, picnic area, prayer space and Changing Places toilets.
“February 2023 will mark a huge moment in Manchester Museum’s rich history as we open our doors following a major transformation,” said Esme Ward, director of Manchester Museum.
“We have extended the building, making room for more joy and learning and evolving into the museum Manchester needs. Beautiful new galleries and exhibitions will showcase the best of the museum’s historic collections, as well as addressing the urgencies of the present day and highlighting the complexities of our world. We have also listened to advocates with lived experience, and inclusive new spaces and features are incorporated throughout.
“We can’t wait to welcome our visitors back.”
The redevelopment has been supported with funding from Arts Council England, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the University of Manchester and private donations. British architectural practice Purcell provided design services for the project.
