A 21-year-old American tourist has died and a 30-year-old man arrested after a woman was pushed down a slope by Neuschwanstein Castle - one of Germany’s most popular heritage attractions.

The man, also American, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and sexual assault after allegedly attacking the two women at the castle and throwing them down a 50-metre (164-foot).

One of the women died overnight from her injuries, while the other, aged 22, is in hospital with serious injuries.

The man fled the scene and a suspect was arrested shortly afterward, following a large police operation.

Neuschwanstein was built in 1868 by Bavaria’s King Ludwig II but never occupied. The site now draws an estimated 1.4 million visitors each year.
