The fire that has almost totally destroyed Swedish theme park Liseberg’s under-construction Oceana Water World waterpark continues to burn, with emergency services saying that firefighting efforts are being complicated by risk of building collapse.
One person is still missing following the blaze, which broke out on Monday (February 12). Firefighters in Gothenburg said yesterday that the blaze had been brought under control, but it flared up again later in the evening.
“The construction is burning and we can't enter some parts of the building to fight the fire because the risk of collapse is too great,” said a statement from Gothenburg emergency services. “We are making sure the fire doesn't spread to adjacent buildings.”
Local police have said that an investigation into gross negligence and workplace offenses has been opened.
Commenting following the press conference yesterday, Andreas Andersen, CEO of Liseberg, commented: “Many are now wondering, what happens now? The simple answer is that we do not know. Right now, our focus is not on finances or material damages but on the people affected by the fire. Currently, we do not have an overview of the project-related consequences. At the same time, I can promise that we will look forward with determination and hope. We will get through this.”
