Japanese people are opting to stay at home rather than travel overseas despite the complete end to Covid-travel restrictions in the country as of October 2022.
According to the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO), while demand has increased, the 3.6 million people that travelled overseas in the first half of 2023 represent just 37.9% of the pre-pandemic total in 2019.
JTB - Japan’s largest travel agency - says that factors such as the weak yen, inflation and lingering fears over the coronavirus stopping them from booking foreign trips. This combined with falling real wages and more expensive travel has seen Japanese people opt for domestic travel instead.
As a result, sales of JTB’s summer tours to the Universal Studios Japan theme park in Osaka have beaten 2019 levels, with new destinations such as Ghibli Park also luring domestic tourists.
