India’s Sanskar Kendra to become world heritage museum

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced plans to transform the Sanskar Kendra museum in India’s Gujarat region into a World Heritage City museum.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced plans to transform the Sanskar Kendra museum in India’s Gujarat region into a World Heritage City museum.

The museum, which is home to a rare seated marble statue of Queen Victoria and the foundation stone of the Ellisbridge, closed its doors in March 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic and has remained closed due to safety concerns.

Now, however, the AMC plans to restore the building, designed by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier in 1954, and make several improvements including the addition of a ground-floor cafeteria, elevator and new air conditioning system.

“We will be working on the storyline of the heritage. It will be expanding in nature and will incorporate the changing dynamics of the era,” said Rushi Pandya, an additional city engineer at AMC.
