North Yorkshire Council has announced plans to reopen Alpamare, a shuttered waterpark in Scarborough, UK, for the 2024 summer season after taking ownership of the attraction.
The £14m (US$18m, €16m) waterpark first opened in 2016 and offers four water rides, as well as several indoor and outdoor pools and a spa.
It was temporarily closed in October 2023 to undergo essential maintenance works but was forced to close permanently after its operator, Benchmark Leisure Ltd went into administration, despite receiving millions of pounds of public money.
Now, however, North Yorkshire Council has revealed plans to reopen the waterpark pending the results of a contractor assessment.
“We are committed to ensuring that all the necessary assessments and works are undertaken in a thorough and professional manner and that we consider all options for the future operation of the site,” said Kerry Metcalfe, assistant director for commercial, property and procurement at North Yorkshire Council.
“It is hoped that measures will be in place to open the facility in time for the 2023 summer season.”
