Hong Kong launches month-long celebration of the island’s cultural heritage

Hong Kong’s Leisure and Culture Services Department (LCSD) is launching a new month-long initiative to celebrate its cultural heritage.

Hong Kong’s Leisure and Culture Services Department (LCSD) is launching a new month-long initiative to celebrate its cultural heritage.

Launching in June, Hong Kong’s Intangible Cultural Month seeks to broaden the island’s appeal as a tourist destination and will showcase the cultural offerings from several districts.

Billed as a celebration of Hong Kong’s traditions, crafts and customs, the festival will offer a host of activities, with visitors able to try their hand at making cheongsam, a type of Mandarin dress also known as a qipao, and traditional bamboo pole noodles.

Dragon boat racing and live performances will also be on offer.

“It’s a very popular trend, many young people are interested in finding out more about history. The same goes for tourists,” said LCSD deputy director Eve Tam Mei-Yee.

“Visitors want to learn more about what is unique about a place, such as its history and culture, that you cannot find anywhere else in the world.”
