An old landfill in the UK thought to contain toxic waste could be leaking into a Unesco World Heritage Site, according to local campaigners.
Famed as one of the birthplaces of the 18th century Industrial Revolution, Stoneyhill in Shropshire sits above the Ironbridge Gorge and is thought to have had hazardous waste dumped there by a now-defunct chemical manufacturer. Built in 1708, Ironbridge Gorge was inscribed on Unesco’s World Heritage list in 1986.
Local members of political group the Green Party, have said they are concerned about the landfill’s contents leaking into the environment.
“There is a need to clarify what’s in the ground and what dangers it poses to the local residents, wildlife and waterways,” said Pat McCarthy, coordinator for the Telford and Wrekin Green Party, speaking to Evening Standard.
