The first giant pandas to enter the US in 21 years are on their way to San Diego, with the landmark moment seeing Beijing loan the iconic animals to the zoo as “envoys of friendship between the Chinese and American peoples”.
The pandas, named Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, have left the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan province and are on a chartered flight to the US, where they will spend the next decade.
The pandas won't be viewable to the public for weeks while they acclimate. Once this period has passed, the zoo will share the date of their public debut.
