The Eurovision Song Contest is expected to net retailers and hospitality venues an extra £470m, with a new report predicting significant boosts in food and drink spend as a result of the show’s return to the UK.
With the contest returning to the UK for the first time in 25 years, a 35% increase in participation, on television, in-person and at special events has been forecast for the one-of-a-kind European cultural event.
The Eurovision Spending Report suggests that the majority of sales made by retailers will come from food and drink spend - accounting for £187m of the sum.
Hospitality venues will also receive a significant boost as a result of the competition being held on home soil, as £143m is expected to be made over the course of the multi-day competition, which is currently taking place in Liverpool, with the Grand Final to be held on Saturday May 13.
“As our data shows, this buzz will result in a busy period for many pubs, bars and restaurants and a boost in sales during the contest, in what is set to be a bumper month for the hospitality industry, said Maureen McDonagh, managing director at VoucherCodes.co.uk, which conducted the survey.
