Amsterdam has banned cruise ships from the city’s centre in an attempt to limit visitor numbers and curb pollution levels.
According to politicians in the Dutch city, cruise vessels are not in line with Amsterdam’s sustainability goals, which means the central cruise terminal on the River IJ will close its doors.
Amsterdam has been undergoing a major transformation when it comes to tourism, with the city planning to ban tourists from cannabis cafés and to move the Red Light District away from the city centre. The city has also trialled self-driving electric boats for its waterways. In March, officials also launched an online campaign urging young British men planning stag parties to stay away from the city.
The city currently welcomes 20 million annual visitors, many of which are attracted by its reputation as a party city.
“Cruise ships in the centre of the city don't fit in with Amsterdam's task of cutting the number of tourists,” said Ilana Rooderkerk of the liberal D66 party, which runs Amsterdam along with the Labour party and environmentalists.
