Blackpool’s £13m Showtown Museum finally gets opening date

The long-awaited Showtown Museum in Blackpool, UK, finally has an opening date.

The long-awaited Showtown Museum in Blackpool, UK, finally has an opening date.

Opening on March 15, 2024, the £13m (US$16.5m, €15.2m) attraction was granted planning permission in 2018, however, several delays, including the Covid-19 pandemic, pushed its opening date back a number of times.

Housed on the first floor of the Sands Hotel on Blackpool promenade, the museum will celebrate Blackpool’s entertainment history. Its exhibits include an 80kg (176lb) elephant as part of its ‘Roll Up! Roll Up!’ exhibition.

The museum is partially funded by Blackpool Council, which is paying £250,000 (US$317,000, €292,000) annually to lease the space, with the rest of the funding coming from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Northern Cultural Fund and the Lancashire Economic Partnership Growth Deal.

“The Showtown Museum has been a vital regeneration project for Blackpool and will enable culture-led economic growth, offering a new kind of experience to complement the incredible attractions for which the town is already known,” said Councillor Lynn Williams, leader of Blackpool Council.
