Alton Towers Resort in Staffordshire, UK, has unveiled plans for a new £12.5m (US$15.3m, €14.5m) attraction.
The Merlin-operated theme park has recently submitted a planning application to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council for ‘Project Horizon’, a new indoor attraction located in the southwest corner of the park, in an area known as Coaster Corner.
While the exact nature of the attraction remains a secret, the application revealed that Project Horizon will comprise a main building, entrance feature, plaza and queueing area.
According to the application, Project Horizon will take two years to build and will create 85 construction jobs. Once complete, it will support 107 additional full-time roles at the park and will generate up to £5.1m (US$6.25m, €5.93m) in indirect and induced spending, as well as an additional £2.2m (US$2.7m, €2.5m) in off-site spending.
“[Project Horizon] will provide a new indoor attraction, enhance the visitor economy and contribute to the economic growth of Staffordshire Moorlands district,” the application said.
“A large benefit of the proposal is that it allows Alton Towers Resort to continue to attract guests and allows the resort to remain competitive within an increasingly competitive market. In turn, this provides noteworthy economic benefits in the form of tourism and employment.”
