With temperatures across parts of Europe exceeding 45C in recent days, staff at a number of Greek heritage sites, including the Acropolis, will stop work for four hours a day starting Thursday (July 20).
Known as ‘Cerberus’, the heat wave has seen temperatures dangerously high. Staff at the Acropolis, along with all of Greece’s ancient sites, are halting work in protest of working conditions during the extreme heatwave.
According to The Panhellenic Union of Antiquities Conservation Officers (Pevla), the halt will also see a two-hour work stoppage at museums and archaeological sites.
“In view of the problems we faced in archaeological sites and especially in the Acropolis in recent days, we unanimously decided on measures to protect the health of antiquities guards as well as visitors,” said a Pevla statement.
“Despite the extreme conditions faced by all the antiquities guards, amid temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius, we have tried to respond to our duties, ignoring the dangerousness of the phenomenon.”
